5 Yesterdays
5 Yesterdays is a one-of-a-kind learning progam for rising third through eighth graders. This program offers one week hands-on summer sessions which concentrate on the crafts and lifestyles of the Moravians who lived in Salem in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.
5 Yesterdays sessions meet Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to noon, in Old Salem. Grades 6--8 will meet June 28--July 5 and July 5--9. Grades 3--5 will meet July 12--16, July 19--23, and July 26--30. Participants are introduced to textiles, pottery, fireplace cooking, leatherworking, and woodworking. Activities are planned according to age and ability. The activities are varied each year so participants attending more than one year in a row will not repeat previous activities. Each 5 Yesterdays week concludes with a special Lovefeast at Home Moravian Church on Friday. Children will be in traditional Moravian dress to attend the Lovefeast on Friday. There will be time for photo opportunities at 11:45 a.m. after the Lovefeast. Registration is $175 ($140 for Friends of Old Salem).
3 Yesterdays
The 3 Yesterdays program is an exclusive program for rising 1st and 2nd graders. The program allows children to follow Sister Maus through Salem while experiencing how Salem children would have worked, learned, and played long ago. Activities include grinding corn, hearth cooking, seeding and planting cotton, learning in a traditional school setting, and making and playing with period toys. The 3 Yesterdays program meets Tuesday through Thursday, June 22-24, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Registration is $100 ($85 for Friends of Old Salem).
