Job Title: Evening & Weekend Caretaker

Duties: Seeking a “Weekend Caretaker” for the historic site of Old Salem.  In exchange for efforts to satisfy this volunteer position, the caretaker will be given a residence within the district. Experience in facilities management and public engagement are desirable.  Essential job functions include, but are not limited to, overseeing all weekend and after-hours operations & emergency situations.

Requirements/Qualifications: This position requires the ability to climb multiple stairs into buildings with limited ADA accessibility, traverse the entire historic district over gravel, brick, asphalt, dirt, stone walks, and respond to emergencies quickly both physically as well as via phone.


Job Title: Maintenance Technician

Salary/ Range:  $8 – $10 hr

Duties: Perform minor electrical, plumbing, carpentry, painting, and mechanical repairs.  Assist with the daily opening and closing of exhibition properties and covering weekend duties for the Maintenance Department.  Assist in preparations for and support special events.  Operation of equipment and vehicles as needed.   Janitorial duties including mopping, trash removal and cleaning as needed.  Working on elevated surfaces, steps, ladders, rooftops, or from mechanical platforms that exceed 30 feet in height.

Requirements/Qualifications: One to two years related experience. Ability to lift and move objects weighing 50-75 lbs regularly.  Ability to work nights and weekends as required for special events or other required tasks. Ability to stand and walk for a significant portion of the work day.  Climbing including steps and the use of ladders. Must work indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions.  Valid North Carolina driver’s license.


Job Title: Sales Associate

Duties: Interested in a retail job in a lovely, historical setting?  We are looking for a part-time sales associate to work in our Moravian Book & Gift Shop.  As a sales associate, responsibilities will be but are not limited to, excellent customer service; processing POS (Point of Sale) purchases, including retail merchandise and ticket and membership sales; stocking inventory; and light cleaning.

Requirements/Qualifications: Retail experience is helpful but not necessary, although a willingness to learn is essential. Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and some holidays.  Candidates must be able to stand for long periods, lift 25 lbs. and use stairs.


Job Title: Landscape Maintenance Tech
Department: Horticulture Dept
Classification: Fulltime
Salary/Range: $8-$10 hr

Duties: This hands-on position is responsible for landscape maintenance of all OSMG properties.  This includes implementing the maintenance of the gardens, grounds, and composting operations of OSMG properties. This position performs routine maintenance of equipment & tools, as well as other horticulture related tasks.  This is a scheduled 40-hour per week position.

Requirements/Qualifications: Knowledge of plant materials and general horticulture practices. Experience working with two-cycle and four-cycle engines. Ability to operate basic equipment (riding mowers, skid-loaders, tractors, gas/electric carts) Valid North Carolina driver’s license. Ability to independently exercise discretion and judgment in the completion of work tasks and program goals. Ability to engage successfully with other OSMG staff in addressing and resolving work tasks. Ability to work outside in all types of weather and to undertake moderate physical activities (lift in excess of 40 pounds, climb ladders, and safely use hand and power tools.
