Historic Tradesperson 

The Historic Trades department is in search of an energetic and sociable individual to help expand our woodworking program. This full-time position involves the interpretation of the 18th and 19th century Moravian experience and Joiners trade while producing historically accurate reproductions using period correct tools and techniques.  This position requires excellent communication and customer service skills and the ability to manage large groups of visitors.

The work occasionally involves larger carpentry projects which can require lifting and carrying in excess of 75lbs. Work is conducted both inside and outside in varying weather conditions.

Old Salem is open year round, position seekers should expect to work Tuesday through Friday and alternating weekends. Employees are expected to work special events and holidays.

Applicants should have either a four year college degree or at least three years in the museum field or related woodworking experience. Training and costumes are provided.

Winkler Baker

Are you looking for a career that is a bit “off the beaten path”?  Do you love meeting new people?  If you answered yes to both, then this is the job for you.  A full-time interpreter/educator/wood-fired oven baker is needed for Winkler Bakery.  The ideal candidate will have either prior knowledge or willingness to learn the art of wood-fired bake oven process and be someone who can easily move between the task of making various baked goods while interpreting the history of Salem and Winkler Bakery.  This position requires a creative, friendly and welcoming personality; wearing historic clothing; the ability to stand for long periods of time, to bend and stoop, to lift up to 25 pounds and to maneuver a wheelbarrow loaded with firewood; and working Saturdays.

Part-Time Historic Interpreters

Part-time costumed staff is needed to greet and interact with visitors in our historic buildings, and to provide excellent customer service.  Current openings are year round part-time only, working weekdays from 9:10 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Tuesday thru Friday, and some weekends, including Sundays 12:40 pm to 4:45 pm.  Some weekend only work is also available.  Position requires excellent communication and customer service skills, the ability to stand for long periods of time and go up and down stairs, and the ability to work well with groups and individuals (children and adults).  Training is provided.  Period costumes, except shoes, are also provided along with instructions for the proper way to wear and care for them.
