Eligible Projects

The fellowship is directed toward post-graduate young or new scholars in the field of architectural history. It can cover a variety of research activities; examples include architectural surveys, historic structure reports, and biographies.  Fieldwork and recording projects are encouraged.

The principal time period to be covered under this fellowship program shall be prior to 1860. Although it is acknowledged that certain studies, especially biographies, may well extend beyond that cutoff date, the primary focus of work funded under this program should be in the pre-1860 period.

The geographical areas of eligibility are Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Louisiana.

Previously funded projects include a survey of slave housing in Tennessee, bousillage construction in Louisiana, a 17th century house site in Virginia, and 18th century building material sources in piedmont North Carolina.

Final Product

The final product of the fellowship will include a report of findings based on the research activities funded. A copy of the completed report, with other types of research materials, will be submitted by the scholar to be placed in the Old Salem library. Other products, such as articles in Old Salem and MESDA publications, will be discussed as appropriate. Acknowledgment of the fellowship will be made in any publication or presentation of the information acquired as a result of the fellowship.

Applications

Applications can be submitted at any time. An initial telephone inquiry is recommended.

Applicants must submit the following:

- A project summary, including a project time line

- An overall budget with the basis for fellowship amount requested

- A description of the final product  and items to be provided to Old Salem upon completion of project

- Evidence of ability to complete the project (such as a resume and letters of support)

Generally fellowships are awarded for one to six months. Stipend amounts will vary based on the project. Fellowships are taxable according to IRS rules.  Submit application materials to:
