Museum Class: Easter Egg Decorating

Thursday, March 29, 2012

6:00pm - 9:00pm

Single Brothers' Workshop

(10 W Academy Street)

Learn about natural dyes for Easter eggs, dye your own eggs to take home using onion skins, cochineak and cabbage, as well as painting an egg based on one in Old Salem's collection.

Like other Eastern European groups, the Moravians sometimes dyed eggs to celebrate Easter.  These eggs would be boiled, colored with natural dyes, and then eaten on Easter day.  Sometimes the eggs had designs drawn on them, and these could be saved from year to year, often given as a gift.  Old Salem has a number of these decorated eggs in our collection from the 19th century.

Our museum class will learn how to create several natural dyes for eggs, and participants will get to take home several eggs they dye themselves.  You will also get to try two different ways to create designs on the dyed eggs, one done by scratching off some of the dye to create a picture, the other by putting beeswax on the egg before dyeing, creating a resist design on the dyed egg.  A great way to decorate for Easter, and something that can be done year after year at home, continuing a wonderful tradition!
