GRADE 6 European Immigrants in Salem, NC This tour 2 1/2 hour, hands-on tour explores the Germanic roots of European settlers and immigrants in Salem and how they influenced food, language and culture in early 19th century Salem. Each tour is led by costumed museum educators. * Prepare an early German recipe on the hearth. * Visit the Single Sisters' House to see how the Moravians' belief in education enabled women to achieve independence and financial security, unlike most women of the time. * Study Moravian pottery and create a slip-trail design that reflects the German influence in art. * Use primary documents and period maps to explore the life and travels of a young woman born in Salem in 1791.
