Champion was a freedman who lived in the vicinity of Salem, North Carolina. He settled here around 1784, and began working as a stonebreaker. The Aufseher Collegium noted his usefulness to the community as a builder. He built his own home near the mouth of the Brushy Fork where he could find an abundance of material. Champion was one of several providers of stone to the masons in Salem and the surrounding area in the 1780s.
