Old Salem Guide for Residents

As part of Old Salem Museums & Gardens’ mission, we protect the historic buildings and landscape within the historic district. Since many properties are privately owned, the museum has achieved this goal, in part, by using deed covenants that protect the historic properties and their compatibility with the museum function. While there is a locally designated historic district with its own guidelines, the two work in parallel to allow the restored area to maintain its unique character and accuracy. The Guide for Residents (last updated in 2012) outline how OSM&G reviews changes made by owners of their properties. Copies are made available to any purchaser and provided in advance to real estate agents listing properties, to be clear about the current limitations with purchasing a property in Old Salem. Further details or questions can be directed to the Director of Architecture at OSM&G.
