The Market-Fire Engine House was built on Salem Square in 1803. Half of the building was used as a marketplace for the sale of fresh meat and other foods. The other half was used to store the fire equipment essential to the town’s plan to prevent and manage fires.
Today’s Market-Fire Engine House was reconstructed in 1955. The market portion serves as a pass through to the Square, while the fire house still contains fire fighting equipment for visitors to see including a reproduction fire engine, leather fire buckets, and ladders.
