The Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts is accepting applications from graduate students, decorative arts professionals, and independent scholars for the 36th MESDA Summer Institute.  The 2011 Summer Institute explores the material culture of the Southern Backcountry, with a particular focus on the decorative arts of Tennessee and Kentucky.

About the 2011 Summer Institute
The program’s month-long curriculum includes lectures, discussions, workshops, artifact studies, research projects, and a study trip to the Valley of Virginia and Tennessee.

Three hours of graduate credit are awarded through the University of Virginia’s Graduate Program in the History of Art and Architecture. Graduate students in the fields of American history, material culture, museum studies, historic preservation, and related fields, and professionals in the museum, education, or related fields are encouraged to apply.

For the first time, MESDA’s biennial Textile Seminar goes “On the Road” in 2012, bringing this event to the colorful and culturally rich Valley of Virginia. Speakers will discuss the decorative arts, material culture, and textile heritage of the Shenandoah Valley.  Seminar participants will have the opportunity to visit and examine several public and private collections of Valley textiles quilts, coverlets, and samplers. Presenters include: Jeffrey S. Evans, Mary H. Robare, Beverley Evans, and others.

2012 Textile Seminar Registration: $350.00 /  $300.00 for Friends of MESDA or Old Salem, includes all sessions, evening reception, dinner, two lunches, admissions, study trip transportation and object studies.

Registration is limited. Registration deadline: March 7, 2012
