The Miksch House, built of logs in 1771 and covered in clapboard and painted soon thereafter, was the first house built in Salem to be occupied by a single family. Prior to this time, the First through Fifth Houses, located further north on Main Street, had been constructed as shared living spaces for the first settlers of Salem.
Matthew and Henrietta Miksch, and daughter Martha, lived here and sold products from here that included gingerbread, candles, processed tobacco and snuff.
In addition to the Miksch family’s home, you will see the shed and the family garden in the rear.
