Summer Camps

5 Yesterdays & 3 Yesterdays

5 Yesterdays (Grades 3-8)

5 Yesterdays is a one-of-a-kind learning progam for rising third through eighth graders. This program offers one-week hands-on summer sessions which concentrate on the crafts and lifestyles of the Moravians who lived in Salem in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.

Sessions meet Monday - Friday, 9:00am - 12:00pm in Old Salem. Participants are introduced to textiles, pottery, fireplace cooking, leatherworking, and woodworking. Activities are planned according to age and ability. The activities are varied each year so participants attending more than one year in a row will not repeat previous activities.

Each 5 Yesterdays week concludes with a special Lovefeast at Home Moravian Church on Friday. Children will be in traditional Moravian dress to attend the Lovefeast on Friday. There will be time for photo opportunities at 11:45 a.m. after the Lovefeast.

   Apprenticeship Program (Grades 9-11)

The Apprentice Program is a two week hands-on experience with the Old Salem Historic Trades staff. Apprentices will learn about the importance of trades and how the knowledge and skills of the craftsmen were handed down generation to generation.

Each apprentice will finish projects in period crafts, work on one large group project, and help prepare a full historic meal on the hearth.  This year’s focus is on textiles, flax and wool and apprentices will also learn about tinsmithing, blacksmithing and leatherworking.

They will become familiar with the workings of a living history museum, see behind the scenes and begin to understand a trade and interpret it to visitors.  They will dress in period costume each day.
