SUMMARY:Artistic Liberties: Southern Paintings and American Identity Seminar and Workshops
DESCRIPTION:Early American artists navigated rapidly changing political and social landscapes\, while holding a unique responsibility: documenting a nation in flux. As we commemorate America’s semiquincentennial\, this seminar will explore the ways that artists in the colonial and early American periods utilized subjects\, color\, and technique to reflect on an emerging nation and create a burgeoning American identity. \n\n\n\nParticipants will engage in two days of lectures\, including a keynote address by Laura Barry\, Director of Collections and Deputy Chief Curator at Colonial Williamsburg\, as well as opportunities to participate in pre-conference workshops and an open house of paintings in MESDA’s study galleries.

DESCRIPTION:Get your hands on one of Old Salem’s staples in baking and cooking: Earthenware pottery! Learn about the press-mold pottery techniques that put the Salem potters on the map and see the bakeware in action. Participants will not only get their hands on the clay\, but also sample a traditionally made apple tart\, and receive a finished redware tart dish to take home.  \n\n\n\nThis workshop is appropriate for ages 8+\, and we ask that any ticketed minors be accompanied by a ticketed adult. \n\n\n\nRegistration for this event ends 10/9/2026.

SUMMARY:Night Watchman Evening Tours
DESCRIPTION:Join Old Salem’s night watchmen on their lantern-lit nightly rounds as we investigate true stories from the records…stories of spirits and fires\, of ruffians and corpses! \n\n\n\nExperience the original building where these mysteries and tragedies took place\, and step into a time of instability and many unknowns. Learn about Salem’s most famous legend\, as well as stories you have never heard before. How did the early inhabitants of Salem grapple with the dangers and suspense of their world\, and make sense of supernatural phenomena? \n\n\n\nGrab a cloak and lantern\, and join the night watch to see for yourself! \n\n\n\nThis exciting tour is our most in-depth yet\, and is designed for suspense-seeking guests ages 10+. This is a partially outdoor walking tour\, on uneven streets\, and in buildings with stairs. The tour may be held regardless of weather conditions. \n\n\n\nSix tours will be held nightly\, beginning at 6:30 PM with the final tour beginning at 7:45 PM. The tour is approximately 60 minutes in length\, and 12 tickets are available for each time slot.

SUMMARY:Southern Furniture & American Identity: MESDA Furniture Seminar
DESCRIPTION:American colonists and Americans in the new republic experienced one constant: change. From changing political identities\, geographic boundaries\, and conceptions of freedom\, American lives constantly evolved. This seminar will explore the ways that craftspeople and cabinetmakers navigated this ever-shifting political and social landscape and the ways that they reflected shifting American and European tastes and identities in their work. \n\n\n\nYou can join us in Winston-Salem or online for this two day seminar. Participants will engage in two days of lectures\, including a keynote address by Dr. Tiffany Momon\, Director of the Center for Historic Preservation\, Middle Tennessee State University and Founder of the Black Craftspeople Digital Archive\, as well as opportunities to participate in pre-conference workshops and a furniture open house in MESDA’s study galleries.

Rooted in the Moravian educational philosophy that “all play has purpose\,” these days invite homeschoolers to take learning beyond the classroom and explore the cross-curricular connections found in local history. \n\n\n\nOn Homeschool Days\, large public-school groups are not booked\, allowing for a different flow that better accommodates smaller groups and family visits. Homeschool families and co-ops receive group-tour pricing typically reserved for groups of 12 or more\, while still enjoying full access to regular museum programming.
