Walking Tour of the Streets of Old Salem (Architecture)
Robbie King, Director of Restoration & Interpreted Environments, Old Salem Museums & Gardens.
Ever wondered what’s behind that door or up those stairs? Well, this is the tour for you! Walk the streets and plunder the buildings in search of the scarce, the hidden and the intriguing. Included on this stealth path are the Volz Barn, rarely opened (even by us!); the Tavern’s third level rooms, still accented with antique wallpaper and hand stenciling; the Tavern’s cellar, complete with original and modern mechanisms; The Shoe Shop, closed to the public but fully outfitted in period fashion; The Single Brothers’ House upper attic, where history lurks; and, the Doctors’ House hidden attics, where architecture and practical needs merged.
Tours start at the Front Door of the Horton Museum Center, 924 South Main Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27101.
Recommended: Free Parking at the Old Salem Visitor Center, 900 Old Salem Road. Walk across the Heritage Bridge to the Horton Museum Center.

Comfortable shoes and clothing are recommended. Some spaces have tight corridors. If you have a flashlight, bring it along! District wide walking, extensive stairs, uneven pavement, gravel & stone walkways
