Description:
A cast iron cooking stove.
History:
Cast iron stoves are found in inventories of very wealthy American homes in the late 18th century, and by the 1820’s were beginning to appear in upper middle class kitchens. Dating this piece is difficult because extensive research has not been done in the area of stove identification, but it is probably ca. 1840.
This stove could be fired with either wood or coal, and the damper on the top of the back regulated the draft, therefore controlling the heat.
