History:
PROVENANCE: Family tradition states that this coverlet belonged to John Owens (1795-1885), who received the coverlet from his mother at her death or during her lifetime, date of receipt being unknown. Owens married Clara Cook on November 13, 1818 in Stokes County, North Carolina, and the couple resided in the Brown Mountain community for the rest of their lives. The coverlet then descended to their granddaughter, Mary Owens George. Mrs. Hollingsworth, a granddaughter of Mary Owens George, received the coverlet before her death. The Owens family was originally from Halifax County, Virginia, and were of Welsh descent.
