DESCRIPTION: A hand pumping fire engine, which was supplied by a bucket brigade. This engine was purchased in 1859 in Baltijmore for use by the Rough & Ready Fire Co. of Salem , NC. An 1891 article written by W.S. Pfohl (probably for the People’s Press–located in WHS scrapbook 3) talks about the history of the Salem Fire Department. Two images from this article (which talks about the purchase of this engine) are in the images file for this object.
