Joiner’s Bench

HOA 30; LOA 119; DOA 48 1/2
Accession Number:
A large workbench with typical European bench features found on other Salem benches. An L-shaped shoulder vice on left corner, a tail vise on the right end, and a row of dog holes down the front edge. A tool tray is present along the back side of the bench top. The base is unusual in construction, with square legs splayed outwards connected by stretchers. The base forms a shelf for tool storage.
Although the bench top has the same features as other Salem benches, (i.e. front and tail vises, tool tray) the construction is more straightforward and less refined. This, along with the unusual base, could indicate an earlier date of construction although there is little other evidence for this theory as yet.
