Description:
This is one of three lithographs of Salem produced by Gustavus Grunewald and printed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It depicts Salem from the southwest from what is now the West Salem and Washington Park neighborhood of Winston-Salem.

ARTIST: Gustavus Grunewald was a Moravian artist. Born in central Europe, he trained in Dresden under the important German landscape artist Caspar David Friederick. In 1833 he was accepted into the Moravian Community at Bethlehem where he taught at the Moravian Seminary for Young Ladies.
