Description
This small painting is very similar to an embroidery on silk made by Mary Boyd Henderson, who attended Salem Academy between 1830-1832.

Both the lyre and the floral motifs were quite popular during the “Victorian Classical” period. The black molded frame appears to be original, and is very similar to several profile frames that have local histories.

DESCRIPTION: Oil painting on paper, of 5-stringed brown lyre on white ground, made at the Salem Academy. Lyre is tipped to the right and arrayed with wreath of roses (pink, gold, white and red) and misc. other small flowers (white predominant). Painting of lyre is the reverse of that in the embroidery; both on white ground. For a textile example see photo S-5877 in the MESDA object database.
