We need your help!

Old Salem relies on volunteerism to meet its operational and restoration needs and is greatly appreciative of its volunteer staff. There are many opportunities for volunteers in various departments throughout the museum! All volunteer positions may be applied to as unpaid internships; simply let your interviewer know what you are hoping to get out of your volunteer experience!

Old Salem Volunteer Opportunities:

  • Volunteer Building Guide
    • Greet and welcome guests to various Old Salem venues
    • Respond to questions and provide information to visitors
    • Assist with maintaining historical accuracy of the site
    • Provide active and accurate storytelling to visitors
    • Some positions require costumed interpretation, depending on location
  • Marketing/Communications Volunteer
  • Administrative Volunteer
  • Education Volunteer
  • Historic Trades Volunteer
    • Greet and welcome guests to Old Salem venues
    • Respond to questions and provide information to visitors
    • After first 72 hours of service, volunteer may participate with limited trades work and maintaining of tools
    • Discuss Moravian history and trade-specific content with others.
  • Garden Volunteer
    • Assist Horticulture Staff in maintaining Old Salem’s gardens
    • Single Brothers’ Garden, Triebel Garden, Miksch Garden, Levering Garden, Leinbach Garden, Cape Fear Garden,
    • Garden Volunteer Opportunities are Monday through Friday 7:30am – 1:30pm
  • Costume Shop Volunteers
    • Complete mending and alterations by hand or machine as directed
    • Make smaller costume pieces such as kerchiefs, caps, bags, collars, and bonnets
    • Make and sew on covered buttons and common buttons; make handsewn buttoholes
    • Hand sew finished edges on garments
    • Sort remnants and supplies as needed
    • Iron costume pieces
    • Assist in maintaining inventory
