Hands-On History Workshop

Slip Trail Plates: Hand-On History Workshop

Make Your Own Mark In Historic Art!

Join us at Old Salem Museums & Gardens for a special hands-on workshop this May, celebrating the rich heritage and creativity of the early 1800s. Hosted in the historic Single Brother’s Workshop, our Education Coordinators from the Learning In Place Team invite you to step back in time and immerse yourself in traditional pottery making.

Participants will be introduced to the practical art form that is the creation of slip trail plate art – this is one of our most-anticipated events every year!

What to Expect:

Workshop Highlights:

  • Create Your Own Slip-Trail Plate: Learn about the iconic pottery designs and techniques that distinguished the Salem potters. Each participant will receive an unfinished clay plate to decorate using traditional tools and designs, including the option to learn about Moravian symbolism or create your own motifs.
  • Finishing Touches: Don’t worry about mistakes; we’ve got spare plates! After decorating, we’ll fire your plates and coat them with a food-safe clear glaze. Your finished masterpiece will be ready for pickup at the Old Salem Visitor Center within 3-6 weeks, complete with instructions for care – hand wash only, as these traditional earthenware pieces are not dishwasher or microwave safe.
