Summer of Freedom

This summer, join us at Old Salem Museums and Gardens for hands-on activities, a district-wide scavenger hunt, guided walking tours, LIVE music, and more!

Join Old Salem and Creative Corridors on June 14th, 2025 in celebrating the self-emancipation of Peter Oliver, a skilled craftsman and the only documented resident of Old Salem to purchase his own emancipation.
Experience a fire bucket brigade demonstration honoring Oliver’s role in Salem’s historic fire brigade, demonstrations in the pottery workshop, and guided tours focusing on Salem through Peter Oliver’s eyes departing the Horticulture Center at 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM.

On June 14th, 1777, Congress officially adopted the flag known as Old Glory as a symbol of unity in the United States, with 13 red and white stripes and 13 stars spaced evenly in a field of blue.
The American flag evolved as the nation grew, and many of the former designs can be seen right here in Old Salem. Bring the family and receive a scavenger hunt sheet with your ticket purchase to learn all about our flag’s history together. Once complete, bring it back to the Visitor’s Center for a surprise for the kids!
The scavenger hunt will be running from Flag Day on June 14th all the way through the end of July! Click here to get your tickets today.

Did you know that Old Salem was the site of the first EVER recorded Independence Day Celebration in North Carolina? In 1783, Governor Alexander Martin declared July 4th a day of thanksgiving and peace and Salem residents shared in food, fellowship, and celebration.
This 4th of July, bring the entire family to Old Salem for a fun-filled day of historic immersion, live music, and hands-on activities for ALL ages!
All Independence Day Celebration events are INCLUDED with your standard ticket purchase, so click here to reserve your spot today!

This summer, join us for a series of hands-on workshops exploring the artistry, science, and craftsmanship of Old Salem. Afterward, leave with your very own handmade creation!
See here for additional workshop details and for booking!
